Book Launch: This Poem of a Life

Author Reading with Special Guests

Kerri Lyn Kumasaka is the author of the book A Poet’s Story, originally published in 2007, now reissued in 2026 as This Poem of a Life. The poet, writer and artist lives in Boulder, Montana.

Carla Rachel Sameth, former Altadena Co-Poet Laureate and Poet Laureate Fellow with the Academy of American Poets, has published three books: a full-length poetry collection, Secondary Inspections, the chapbook, What Is Left and the memoir One Day on the Gold Line.

Manuela Gomez Rhine is the author of the novels ThePalm Tree Chronicles and The Wild Chihuahuas of Mexico. She lives in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Recently named one of 2024’s Up and Comers of the Year (The New York City Jazz Record), Devon Gates is a bassist, vocalist, and composer from Atlanta, Georgia, now based in Brooklyn, NY. After studying anthropology and jazz performance at Harvard University, Berklee College of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music (London, UK) she has emerged in the contemporary jazz scene, working with esteemed artists including Terri Lyne Carrington, Vijay Iyer, Jen Shyu, and Nicole Mitchell, and performing at venues such as SFJazz, the Montreal Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and the London Jazz Festival.

Naomi Moon Siegel is a trombonist, improviser, composer, and educator whose work is geared toward cultivating community and a positive, transformative music culture. She has “crafted a truly unique aesthetic, combining elements of straightahead, fusion and modern jazz with world-music flavors in a way that sounds entirely of the 21st century” (JAZZIZ). A recipient of the Montana Arts Council Artist Innovation Award, Chamber Music America Performance Plus Grant, and Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award, she has released three albums as a bandleader and collaborated with countless others including Wayne Horvitz, Kate Olson, and Jessica Lurie.

The Attacca Quartet

The Attacca Quartet is a two-time Grammy-winning American string quartet known for its versatility, blending traditional classical music with electronica, video game scores, and contemporary collaborations, embodying a “quartet for modern times”. Formed at Juilliard, they are celebrated for their innovative approach, acclaimed for albums like Orange (with Caroline Shaw) and Real Life, and recognized for powerful performances of both old masters and new works.
